Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Magazines have long been influential in shaping fashion trends and youth identity by showcasing the latest styles, cultural movements, and social norms. In Ilorin East Local Government, Kwara State, fashion magazines significantly influence how young people perceive themselves and align with societal expectations (Oladipo & Garba, 2024). By featuring local and global fashion trends, magazines serve as a bridge between tradition and modernity, enabling youth to explore new styles while maintaining cultural heritage. Research highlights that youth identity is closely tied to self-expression, and fashion is a primary medium for expressing individuality and belonging (Ahmed & Bello, 2023). However, the portrayal of unattainable beauty standards and consumerism in magazines raises concerns about their impact on self-esteem and cultural values. This study explores the role of magazines in shaping fashion trends and youth identity in Ilorin East, examining their positive and negative influences.
